Set in a landscape of limestone hills, Kanchanaburi lies 130 km from Bangkok at the confluence of the Kwae Yai and Kwae Noi, commonly known as the River Kwai. The famous Bridge on the River Kwai lies 4km northwest of Kanchanaburi. It was first constructed in 1942, when the Japanese army decided to build a 415 km railway line linking Burma and Thailand. The bridge was completed in 1943 when the first trains travelled over the bridge but in 1944 the bridge was bombed several times and was only rebuilt after the conclusion of the war. The curved portions of today’s bridge are original. Pierre Boulle’s novel and subsequent film gave the “Bridge over the River Kwai” particular international awareness. |
