Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand and is a favourite tourist destination. The city has a rich and colourful history evident in the architecture of the city, which includes over 300 wats. It has, perhaps, the greatest concentration of handicraft industries in the country, and it is also an excellent base from which to go trekking and visit the famous hill-tribe villages in the surrounding highlands.
Wat Chedi Luang Is a 500-year-old ruined chedi, once housing the Emerald Buddha, now in Bangkok.
Wat Suan Dok To the west of the town, contains the ashes of Chiang Mai’s royal family.
National Museum Houses a collection of Buddha images and Swankhalok china.
Folk Art Museum Housed in a traditional 130 years old Thai house.
Chiang Mai Zoo and Botanical Gardens The zoo occupies an attractive position on a hillside overlooking the Chiang Mai valley and covers 85 hectares of parkland.
The Night Market West side of Chang Klan road, consists of a number of purpose built buildings with hundreds of stalls selling a huge array of tribal goods as well as clothing, jewellery etc. |
