DESTINATION

The crusade against the Albigensians, or Cathars, began in 1209 in Occitan country. Its aim was to destroy the Cathar heresy in order to maintain the unity of the Roman Catholic Church. To defend themselves against the crusaders, the 13th-century heretics took refuge in many of the region's castles whose spectacular ruins rear up on the rocky mountain summits.

Thus they came to be called 'Cathar Castles' and, by extension, all the surrounding countryside quickly became 'Cathar Country'. We would like to show you this region and its wonderful historical and cultural heritage - great architectural wealth in the form of cathedrals, abbeys, churches, towns, impressive castles and fortified villages.

We would also like to introduce you to another aspect of our heritage, without which France would not be France - our gastronomy, accompanied by regional wines, each with its distinctive qualities, that will delight your palate whether you are a connoisseur or not.

Our best known local speciality is the Blanquette de Limoux, the oldest sparkling wine in the world, the recipe of which inspired the creators of the much celebrated champagne.
