Indigo are delighted to be working closely with Raymond Blanc supplying artefacts for the Malaysia Airlines themed garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2005.
Owned by Richard Lightbown and Marion Bender and inspired by Richard’s first journey to India over land by motorcycle in 1972, travelling and collecting has now become a way of life. Starting with a small market stall at Camden Lock over 25 years ago they are now one of the largest importers and restorers of Oriental antique Furniture in the U.K. |

Indigo has a huge collection of furniture and collectables from the East, dating mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The selection on show in the Malaysian hut is representative of village art; practical, well-made and charming, a celebration of the Malaysian culture of woven basketry, carving and textiles.
The Chinese style has a wonderful simplicity, which lends itself well to contemporary interiors. The selection ranges from large richly lacquered wedding cabinets, elm sideboards, wardrobes, tables, chairs, to carved stone statues and architectural elements.
In juxtaposition the Indian furniture; chests, coffers and tables, are more at home with traditional antiques. Dating back to the colonial era and earlier, styles range from the simple rustic to ornately carved village furniture. |
On a recent buying trip to source stock in India Richard was fortunate enough to meet the son of a Maharajah who has recently set up a small stone mason co-operative in Gujerat. He aims to improve the living conditions of the poor people in his local community and has open up apprentice schools employing master craftsmen from neighbouring towns to share their ancestors' secrets. The result is an excellent array of beautifully hand carved stone garden urns and jardinières, which compliments the range of reproduction cast iron garden furniture at the Indigo barn in Wiltshire. Indigo are one of the largest importers and restorers of Oriental antique Furniture in the U.K and have been established for over 25 years. |
