The ancient city of Bagan was once the hub of Buddhist educational and spiritual enlightenment. Bejewelled with 2,000 pagodas, its monuments are a glittering testament to the city’s golden age.
You can explore this religious city by horse and cart, or wander on foot amongst these remarkable ruins, which conjure up a mystical past.
Shwezigon Pagoda
This was the first major monument built in the Burmese style. The pagoda’s elegant bell shape has been copied by a large number of temples all over Myanmar. The Shwezingon Pagoda sits on three rising terraces and is believed to contain the Buddha’s collarbone and one of his teeth.
Lacquerware Shops
Bagan is famous for its quality lacquerware. Visit craftsmen’s workshops, where you can see this ancient art form in action. A complicated skill that includes seven stages of lacquering before any decoration begins. The designs are handed down through generations and usually done freehand, purely from memory. |
