Mandalay

A stroll through Myanmar’s second largest city will transport you back to a world of ancient shrines and palaces.

Downtown Mandalay vibrates with the noise of master craftsmen working with gold, jade, precious jewels and emblazoned tapestries. Eat like a local and sample the wares of street vendors who sell rice cakes and curries or sit in one of the cafés in Zegyo Market.

U Bein Bridge
This teak bridge stretches across Taungthaman Lake. Visit at dusk and watch fishermen waiting for their catch, monks walking from one end to the other, locals biking from shore to shore. A canoe ride under U Bein Bridge is a popular way of experiencing its mystical atmosphere.

Shwenandaw Kyaung
In this teak monastery King Mindon housed his 40 concubines and 200 or so children. It is a wonderfully fragile yet grand example of local, 19th-century teak architecture and also a significant masterpiece of the woodcarver’s art.

Sagaing
Myanmar’s spiritual capital contains over 600 monasteries and study centres for monks and nuns. The local market is wonderful to stroll around and a local pottery village offers the chance to see traditional pots being handcrafted.
