COPACABANA PALACE CELEBRATES 90TH ANNIVERSARY
23 September 2013 – The iconic Copacabana Palace marked its 90th anniversary this summer, transporting guests back to its glamorous heyday with a series of exciting celebrations from 18th July – 4th September.
Rio de Janiero’s most luxurious hotel, Copacabana Palace opened in August 1923 on the legendary Copacabana Beach. Over the years, the art-deco landmark has welcomed royalty, celebrities and politicians through its doors and today it is considered an icon of Brazil’s historical heritage.
The hotel hosted a dazzling schedule of events to mark its incredible journey. This included a series of intimate concerts by renowned Brazilian artist Claudio Botelho, who performed hits by legendary 1920s songwriter Cole Porter in the Golden Room, where stars including Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald have performed. The celebrations also saw diners at Pérgula Restaurant tuck into dishes from the hotel’s old menus, including ‘giant prawn cocktail’ and ‘steak Diane’ which were served to politicians and businessmen in Bife de Ouro before it closed in 1944.
The festivities culminated in a lavish cabaret-themed wrap party on 4th September in the hotel’s Front, Nobre and Golden Rooms, which were decorated in black, white and gold to evoke Copacabana Palace’s glamorous beginnings. Guests enjoyed cocktails and cuisine prepared at gastronomic stations by some of Orient-Express Hotels Ltd.’s most acclaimed chefs: Raymond Blanc from Le Manoir aux Quat-Saisons in Oxford, Jorge González from Hotel Ritz Madrid, Francesco Carli from Copacabana Palace and Ken Hom, who will be fronting a new pan-Asian restaurant at the hotel in early 2014.
