Itinerary

 Day One

On arrival in Edinburgh, travel to The Gleneagles Hotel, host of the 2014 Ryder Cup. One of the world’s leading golf and spa resorts, Gleneagles boasts three championship courses, including the Jack Nicklaus-designed Centenary Course. Dinner is served in the hotel’s magnificent Art Deco Strathearn Restaurant.

Day Two

Your tee times are reserved on The PGA Centenary Course, with superb views of the surrounding countryside. Measuring 7,088 yards from the back tees, the Centenary is the longest inland course in Scotland. Non-golfers can enjoy the resort’s leisure facilities or stroll one of many walking trails around the estate. In the afternoon, board the train as it travels towards the ‘Fair City’ of Perth, continuing on the Highland line through the pretty Perthshire towns of Dunkeld, Pitlochry and Blair Atholl. Dinner is served on the move as you journey north, passing Kingussie and Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park and Inverness, before arriving in Ardgay for the night.

Day Three

After breakfast, travel north-east to Tain, where golfers disembark to play Royal Dornoch Golf Club, the most northerly of the UK’s championship courses, on the shores of Dornoch Firth. Non-golfers can enjoy a private tour of Dunrobin Castle followed by a trip to Dalmore Distillery. All guests rejoin the train in Tain for dinner followed by entertainment in the Observation car as you travel south-east to Kyle of Lochalsh.

Day Four

Depart early from Kyle as the train retraces its route to Inverness. Golfers disembark to play the new Castle Stuart Golf Links, host venue for the Scottish Open 2011-2013, with views across the Moray Firth. Non-golfers alight in Elgin for a visit to Johnston’s Cashmere Centre, followed by a scenic drive to Ballindalloch Castle. In the afternoon, all guests return to the train in Keith, with the opportunity to visit Strathisla Distillery before dinner on board followed by entertainment in the Observation car.

Day Five

Breakfast is served as the train travels south-east to Aberdeen. Disembark to play the championship course at Cruden Bay Golf Club. Opened in 1899, it is a magnificent testimony to the quality of links golf in the north of Scotland. Non-golfers can enjoy a private tour of Pitmedden Gardens, followed by a visit to the 13th century Fyvie Castle after lunch. All guests rejoin the train in Aberdeen before travelling south, through Montrose and Arbroath, to Dundee for overnight stabling. Retire to the Observation Car after dinner for the evening’s entertainment.

Day Six

Depart Dundee in the morning and travel south through the Kingdom of Fife, crossing the Firth of Forth by the Forth Railway Bridge, one of the greatest achievements of the Victorian Age. Arrive in Edinburgh mid-morning, where your journey ends.
