TRAVEL THROUGH CREATIVITY | ORIENT EXPRESS X École des Arts Décoratifs

From the launch of the first Orient-Express train in 1883 to the restoration and creation of future trains, Orient Express has established itself as a historic player in the preservation and promotion of French craftsmanship. Today, we are pleased to carry on this tradition through joining forces with L’École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, in an unprecedented partnership.

For over 250 years, the École des Arts Décoratifs has been training artists and designers of tomorrow. Accustomed to collaborating with major institutions and luxury houses, the school invites 3rd year students from the Design, Textiles and Materials Department to reinvent the Orient Express legend - a global reflection on the myth and its history, rethought in the light of responsible and sustainable topics driving new generations.

This month, third-year Textile & Material Design students immersed themselves in the legend of the train and began to imagine the future of rail travel. They met with architect Maxime D'Angeac, deep-dove into the archives of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, and visited the historic carriages of an Orient-Express train, four of which are listed as Historical monuments in France.

Through this partnership, the students will propose creative projects, supported by savoir-faire, craftsmanship, and industrial strategies, and in which question the new contours of travel and the value’s of tomorrow’s luxury. After presenting an intermediate project this December, the students will reveal their final projects in January 2024.

The partnership between École des Arts Décoratifs and Orient Express will be presented at École des Arts Décoratifs in January, and further during the Journées Européennes des Métiers d'Art in April of 2024.

140 YEARS OF ORIENT EXPRESS | Car n°4160

Once upon a time, distinguished travelers aboard the historic Train Bleu, connecting Paris to the French Riviera would rendezvous in Car n°4160, the train’s bar car. The now historic monument rose to international fame as the site of the film ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. Built in 1929 and decorated by René Prou and René Lalique, the car still stands out for its timeless Art Deco design with its iconic bar made of solid mahogany, its delicate marquetry, and the elegant Lalique glass panels that adorn its walls.
