Itinerary

Day 1 – Singapore
  • Depart from Singapore in the afternoon and settle into your private cabin as the Eastern & Oriental Express journey begins.
  • The train sets off through the city, over the causeway into Malaysia and out into the countryside.
  • An indulgent afternoon tea is served; after you can spend time exploring the train and chatting with fellow guests.
  • Enjoy dinner in one of the opulent dining cars whilst the resident pianist plays in the Bar Car.
  • Retire to your cabin which has now converted into a cosy bedroom.
Day 2 – Penang (Butterworth)
  • Breakfast is served in your cabin before the day’s adventures begin.
  • Disembark at Butterworth, Penang, ready to explore the fragrant Tropical Spice Garden, which boasts over 500 varieties of herbs, spices and other flora in a hillside setting.
  • Enjoy a tour of Georgetown, which includes Khoo Kongsi, the grandest clan temple complex in Malaysia, and the ornate Pinang Peranakan Mansion.
  • A trishaw ride through Georgetown’s old streets is part of the tour, as is a sumptuous Tiffin lunch at the E&O Hotel.
  • On return to the train, you are served afternoon tea and later an elegant dinner as the train makes its way towards Thailand.
Day 3 – Surat Thani & Hua Yai
  • Enjoy breakfast in your cabin before leaving the train for a private visit to the Monkey Training College at Surat Thani, in Southern Thailand.
  • Here, the monkeys are taught to harvest coconuts, so they can help the local farmers pick the ripe ones without causing damage.
  • After your visit, lunch is served on board, the afternoon is at your leisure.
  • In the evening, dress up as a sublime New Year’s Dinner with a special celebratory menu is served on the train.
  • After dinner guests are invited to change into their favorite beach outfit and head down to the beach for a New Years celebration party, with live music, champagne, fireworks and much more.
Day 4 – Kanchanaburi & Wang Po
  • Begin the New Year with an indulgent and leisurely morning on board.
  • The E&O will cross the historic Bridge over the River Kwai in the early morning and travels towards Wang Po where we continue along the famous trestles at the Tham Kasae viaduct – one the railway’s most scenic stretches.
  • A champagne brunch is served to welcome in 2013 before your arrival at Kanchanaburi.
  • Those who wish can enjoy an afternoon tour that includes a cruise along the river, a visit to the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum and the Don Rak War Cemetery.
  • Back on board, there is time to enjoy an aperitif in the bar before a sumptuous dinner is served.
Day 5 – Bangkok
  • Arrive at 09:30am and disembark in Bangkok for your onward journey.
