QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Whilst there are no trains involved here, the grandeur synonymous with Orient-Express is present in abundance. Here are a few questions, with answers, to help you prepare for your Orient-Express Safari.

What should I pack?
Before travelling on an Orient-Express Safari the most important thing to remember is the weight restrictions on the light aircraft that take you from camp to camp. Due to the small size of aircraft baggage is not permitted to be more than 20 kgs in weight as well as in soft sided baggage. Failure to comply with this restriction may result in you having to repack your bags on arrival in Botswana, which as well as being inconvenient, is embarrassing too.

Please do keep in mind all our safari camps have excellent laundry facilities, which is included in the cost of your safari.

What do I need to wear on an Orient-Express Safari?
Smart casual safari wear is the order of the day, and we would recommend comfortable and practicable walking shoes. For morning and afternoon excursions we recommend light windproof jackets as during the winter months  (May - August), it can get rather cool in the evenings/early mornings. For evening dinners, jacket and ties are not required, and depending on the season a light pullover or cardigan is customary during this time. A selection of safari wear is available from Orient-Express Safaris and can be pre-ordered before you start your safari. Please contact Orient-Express Safaris for details.

Are all my drinks and meals included?
Yes.  Provided they are from the standard drinks list which include; all soft drinks, all beers, house wines and spirits, with the exception of imported Champagne. For your convenience, a fully stocked mini bar is located in each tent, the contents of which is complimentary for the duration of your stay. We also include the drinks you have while on safari activities and in the camps public areas. All meals, of which there are four served daily include; an early breakfast, usually cereals toast and freshly baked croissants or muffins; brunch, a selection of a full English breakfast, salads and rice dishes; afternoon tea,  a selection of sandwiches and freshly made cakes; and evening dinner, a three course meal with choice of main course with a wine presentation.  During our safaris, you will not go hungry!

Can you cater for special meal requirements such as vegetarian?
Yes.  As long as we are notified at the time of booking, of any special dietary requirements, we will do our best to fulfil. We do however regret that we are unable to provide meals requiring strict religious observance in the preparation.  Please advise any special requirements on making a reservation.

Can children travel on an Orient-Express Safari?
Orient-Express Safaris are planned to maximise the enjoyment of the wildlife and the contrasting environments while enjoying the best in accommodation, fine food and wines. However, this is a wild and dangerous environment and therefore we do not accept children under 8 years of age unless special prior arrangements have been made.  We also wish to create a relaxed atmosphere that may not be best suited for all children, although they will always be welcomed on safari when accompanied by an adult and 8 years and older.

Are disabled people able to travel with Orient-Express Safaris?
We are able to accommodate passengers with slight walking difficulties although we recommend they are accompanied by an able-bodied passenger. We regret that our safari vehicles or aircraft cannot be boarded in wheelchairs and therefore our safaris  are not suited wheelchair bound travellers. Should you have any special requirements please contact the Orient-Express Safaris office.

Can I smoke on Orient-Express Safaris?
With apologies to smokers, Orient-Express Safaris operates a no smoking policy on all its safari activities. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

Will I need to tip the staff?
Gratuities are at the guests' discretion. Generally any currency is accepted. Guidelines are available from camp management.

Can I buy souvenirs or presents while on safari?
Yes.  Orient-Express Safaris has a range of exclusively designed gifts. This includes such items as safari apparel, exclusive luggage, jewellery, art and curios. Smaller items can be purchased at the camps while larger gifts can be ordered through the camp for shipping. Safari items will soon be available via this web site, in the meantime contact Orient-Express Safaris for more details.

Can you arrange my accommodation in South Africa if I want to stay there before or after my safari?
Yes.  There can be no better way to make a safari extra special than by combining it with a few nights in Cape Town.  We will be pleased to make all the necessary arrangements for you and can offer cost savings at our sister properties - the Mount Nelson Cape Town and The Westcliff Johannesburg.  Please let us know your requirements when you contact Orient-Express Safaris.

Can I get a group discount?
Yes.  An Orient-Express Safari is ideal for celebrating a family occasion or entertaining clients on a corporate incentive. The minimum number required to qualify for a group discount is 15.  An Orient-Express Safari can also be chartered for bigger occasions, though please note the safaris are limited to 24 people.  Further details are available from Orient-Express Safaris.

Can I get married on an Orient-Express safari?
Unfortunately it isn't possible to hold an actual formal ceremony at any of the Orient-Express Safari camps due to their remote locations, and the availability of local pastors.  It may be possible for a blessing to take place at one of the camps after the formal marriage has taken place.
