Itinerary
Day 1: Mandalay - Chindwin Confluence
Arrive in Mandalay and enjoy the scenic transfer to Shwe Kyet Yet where you will board Orcaella.
As the luxury river cruise sets off for the Chindwin confluence, enjoy lunch on board and a relaxing afternoon of sailing.
A welcome cocktail party will be held on Top Deck this the evening.
Day 2: Confluence - Yesagyo - Monywa
Visit the town of Yesagyo and experience the bustling morning market. Stop off at the local monastery and admire its impressive colonial buildings.
Sail on to Monywa for an afternoon tour of the colourful Thanboddhay Pagoda. The walls of this mid-12th century temple are covered in tiny Buddha images. Take a walk around the complex and enjoy the many bright statues and reliefs. Continue on to Bodhi Tataung, the site of 1,000 Buddhas, and the magnificent 424ft standing Buddha.
Day 3: Monywa - Moktaw - Maukkadaw
Cruise to Moktaw, a traditional agricultural village.
Alight for a walking tour of the village and a visit to the monastery that houses the Shwe Moktaw Buddha. At the monastery you will witness a traditional Buddhist noviciation ceremony.
Spend the afternoon relaxing on board as Orcaella sails towards Maukkadaw. During the afternoon there will be a longyi/thanaka demonstration on the Top Deck.
A festive longyi cocktail party will be held this evening.
Day 4: Maukkadaw - Kalewa
Start the day early with a visit to a local tea shop in Maukkadaw. This town is a well-known teak port and many of its houses are built using this attractive tropical hardwood.
Enjoy lunch on board and gaze at the amazing scenery as you pass through jungle clad gorges, a real highlight of the cruise.
On arrival in Kalewa there will be an optional evening walking tour through the town.
Day 5: Kalay - Mawleik
Today you will set off on an early-morning excursion by local bus to the town of Kalay. Known as the trade gateway to India, it has a lively market and many old Baptist churches. This tour offers an insight into a different facet of Myanmar life.
Continue for a late-afternoon tour of Mawleik, once the administrative centre of the Bombay Burmah Trading Company. Take a local tuk tuk and drive past the remnants of the old wooden colonial houses and the impressive administrative building.
Stop at the local golf course, dating from colonial times. We can arrange a 9-hole round for keen players.
Day 6: Mawleik - Sittaung
Spend the morning relaxing on board as you sail towards Sittaung where you will disembark for an afternoon tour and optional jungle trek.
Sittaung is a tiny village surrounded by a patchwork of brilliant-green paddy fields. Enjoy the beautiful view from the small village pagoda.
Day 7: Homalin
Enjoy a relaxing morning lazing on the Top Deck as you cruise to the bustling town of Homalin.
Disembark in the afternoon for an excursion by local tuk tuk to the Buddha Lotus Garden. Stunning views stretch towards the towering mountains that are home to the Naga tribe.
In the evening return to Homalin for a special local performance.
Day 8: Homalin - Kindat - Midriver
Early risers may join a walking tour of Homalin to experience the candlelit street-market. Stop off at a local tea-shop for traditional Burmese tea and a local treat before returning to the ship.
The rest of the day may be spent relaxing on board, watching life unfold on the Chindwin River.
Day 9: Midriver - Mingin - Kani
Disembark for a morning tour to Mingin, including the impressive Mahar Minkyaung Monastery. This distinctive monastery is built in a unique European style featuring Italian glass windows. It houses the Shwe Sagar Buddha, one of 10 carved from a single trunk of wood about 1000 years ago.
Continue to Kyidaung, a typical Burmese village. As the locals warmly welcome you, they offer a glimpse into rural life. Visit Kyidaung Oo Monastery, the centre of village life for the past 300 years.
Rejoin the cruise and continue sailing towards Kani, made famous as the home of the Nat spirit, ‘Lord of the White Horse’. Take a walk through the town to the site of his shrine, where you will experience a nat pwe ritual.
Enjoy a magical sunset over the Chindwin River from a great clifftop vantage point.
Day 10: Kani - Monywa - Pakangal
Embark on an early morning excursion by bus to Hpo Win Taung and Shwe Ba Taung caves. Situated just outside of Monywa, this impressive site comprises 492 Buddha chambers carved into the hillside.
Return to the ship and continue to Pakangyi. Here you visit the ancient Kaung Taw Gyi Monastery and beautiful Pakangyi Sithushin Pagoda, with its centuries-old Buddha statue.
Day 11: Pakangal - Bagan
Arrive this morning in the ancient capital of Bagan. Start the day with visits to the revered Shwezigon Pagoda, Nyaung Oo Market and Hti-Lo Min-Lo Temple.
After lunch on board, visit the ancient sites in and around Bagan and enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the plain.
Enjoy a final farewell cocktail party on board with traditional entertainment.
Day 12: Bagan - Yangon
Disembark early morning for your return flight to Yangon and onward travel.
Please note this itinerary is subject to change.
This cruise can be extended with one or more nights in Yangon either before or afterwards.
