Between Camogli and Portofino, a deep inlet along the indented coastline of the Promontory of Portofino is home to the famous abbey of San Fruttuoso, located in the ononimus fishing village.
The Abbey was property of the Benedictine monks, who lived here in 1200, in its period of maximum splendour. Through the protection of the powerful Dorias Princes, who built in the sixteenth century the defence tower against pirates and the Venetian, the power of San Fruttuoso lasted a long time. Today the abbey, cloister and church (reachable only by sea or on foot) form a monumental complex of exceptional value, restored and protected by the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (F.A.I).
The monastic complex of the X-XI century with the cloisters, the Chapter House and the church can all be visited; as well as the Doria tombs and the XIII-century Gothic section by the sea. It is an absolutely unique place where the work of men integrates perfectly with nature.
