The Art of Block-Printed Wallpaper and Carton-Pierre

Atelier d’Offard

Founded in 1999 in Tours by François-Xavier Richard, Atelier d’Offard – an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant – perpetuates the tradition of block-printed wallpaper while reviving historic techniques such as carton-pierre, adapted for contemporary use. Its team of artisans combines traditional craftsmanship, like engraving, molding, coloring, and installation, with innovative digital tools. The atelier creates both original designs and historical reproductions for heritage sites. In 2009, it received the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for the Intelligence of the Hand.

Wall marquetry

Design by Maxime d’angeac Atelier d’Offard

This variation on Suzanne Lalique-Haviland’s Rail motif was created using the carton-pierre technique, a technique rediscovered and modernized by Atelier d’Offard. More than twelve hundred gilded bricks, each hand-shaped, adorn the walls of the restaurant car.

Atelier d’Offard developed this material from recycled paper offcuts. Once used in the 18th century for the architectural ornamentation of Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Chambord, it finds here a renewed form of expression. The grid relief is sculpted, gilded with gold leaf, then brushed to produce shifting reflections. The result is a harmonious arrangement that plays with interlocking patterns and light, captured and transformed throughout the day.

Excellence Continues at Sea

Excellence and savoir-faire extend the legacy of Orient Express beyond land, finding a new resonance at sea. Aboard the Orient Express Corinthian, the first of the Orient Express Sailing Yachts, the ceiling of The Spa by Guerlain, crafted by Atelier d’Offard, carries forward the art of block-printed wallpaper and carton-pierre into this exceptional setting. The result is a harmonious composition, where interlocking patterns and light interact, shifting subtly throughout the day.
